Hi, great article. I agree the md5 auth type does not work the way you would expect, and I believe the reason is CRDB doesn't support md5 password authentication. So the connection attempt fails when PGB tries to pass the credentials through to the server. In your case you're circumventing this by forcing the pgbouncer user on every connection.

Thank you for your comment, that may be the case indeed. Considering there is a working auth_type=cert method for both client <> pgb and pgb <> server, I do not believe having the working md5 auth_type is relevant.
